DJ Premier has been making the same argument for thirty years, and nobody has proved him wrong yet. He came up in New York in the early nineties as one half of Gang Starr and spent that decade building a production style that almost nobody has managed to replicate since. The approach was deliberate and consistent — a snare on the two and four, a carefully chosen sample, every element reduced to what the track actually needed. At a time when producers were reaching for bigger and louder, Premier went the other way and created some of the most enduring records in the canon. Producers who spent years trying to move past his sound kept referencing it in interviews and quoting it in the records they made. Some ideas are hard to get away from.
